U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff told Congress on Thursday that Iran will allow International Atomic Energy Agency representatives access to its nuclear facilities under understandings reached after the initial U.S.-Iran agreement. According to an AP report based on people familiar with the matter, Witkoff said in a closed briefing that Iran will formally invite the IAEA to inspect its nuclear sites and begin locating and tracking enriched uranium.
Witkoff also said the memorandum of understanding signed between Washington and Tehran does not include side deals. However, he said a separate letter has been drafted between Tehran and the IAEA to arrange the return of international inspectors to Iran.
That letter, which is to be sent to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, would allow preparations to begin soon for the resumption of nuclear monitoring and oversight activities. The report did not give a date for when the inspections would restart, only that the process is expected to move forward in the near term.
