Tel Aviv Beach Prayer Service to Segregate Men and Women After Court Agreement
An agreement has been reached between the Association of Community Rabbis and the Tel Aviv municipality to hold the "Selichot" prayer service at Tel Baruch Beach with separate sections for men and women. The agreement was submitted to the court and has the force of a judicial decision.
The prayer service, scheduled for after Shabbat ends at 11:00 PM on Tel Baruch Beach in Tel Aviv, is expected to include Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu and the Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv, Zvadia Cohen. The Association of Community Rabbis had previously filed a lawsuit against the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality in the Tel Aviv District Court after the municipality refused to permit the "Selichot" service with physical separation between men and women using partitions.
According to the plaintiffs, the municipality initially granted permission for the event, which was to feature prominent rabbis, but then stipulated a ban on physical separation methods. The association argued that this condition violated the freedom of religion for participants and prevented the prayer from being conducted in accordance with Jewish religious law.
