Tel Aviv Allows Selichot Prayer Event After Court Agreement

An agreement has been reached between the Association of Community Rabbis and the Tel Aviv Municipality, formalized as a court ruling, allowing a Selichot prayer event to proceed as planned this Saturday night at Tel Baruch Beach. The event will feature Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu and the Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv.

The Association of Community Rabbis had petitioned the Tel Aviv District Court against the municipality after it initially refused to permit the large Selichot gathering with a partition for gender separation. The Association argued that while an initial permit was granted, the municipality conditioned it on prohibiting gender separation via partitions, which they contended violated religious freedom and prevented the prayer from being conducted according to Halakha (Jewish law).

The prayer event is scheduled to begin at 11:00 PM and is open to the public, emphasizing unity. Rabbis Shmuel Eliyahu, Chief Rabbi Zvadiya Cohen, and neighborhood rabbis were expected to participate.

This resolution comes amidst an ongoing dispute in Tel Aviv regarding gender-separated prayers in public spaces, which notably escalated into confrontations at Dizengoff Square during Yom Kippur in 2023.
