Israeli Basketball Teams Face Uphill Battle for EuroLeague Franchise Status

Two Israeli basketball clubs, Hapoel Tel Aviv and Hapoel Jerusalem, may be facing an uphill battle to secure coveted EuroLeague franchise contracts. While 12 clubs have advanced to the next stage of a selection process for permanent league licenses, with both Israeli teams reportedly among them, their chances of success are being questioned.

A podcast called "Floor Generals," featuring insights from Michalis Stefanou, has identified four clubs considered frontrunners for the franchise deals. These leading contenders are Dubai, Valencia, PAOK Thessaloniki, and Paris. Stefanou indicated that PAOK, in particular, is viewed favorably by EuroLeague management due to recent ownership changes and significant investment.

Following this leading group, Stefanou suggested that the next most likely candidates are Virtus Bologna, Rome, and Napoli, with London Lions also having a reasonable chance. Notably, Hapoel Tel Aviv and Hapoel Jerusalem were not mentioned among these potential recipients, raising concerns about their standing in the race for the permanent contracts.

The EuroLeague is undergoing a format change that includes the awarding of permanent franchise licenses. While no official announcements have been made, the selection process is intensifying, and the absence of the Israeli teams from Stefanou's projected list suggests they may be lagging behind other European and international clubs vying for these lucrative deals.
