Israeli Basketball Teams Face Uphill Battle for EuroLeague Franchise Spots

The race for the eight coveted EuroLeague franchise contracts is intensifying, with numerous clubs applying for permanent licenses as part of a league ownership format change. Twelve clubs have advanced to the next stage of the selection process, reportedly including Israeli teams Hapoel Tel Aviv and Hapoel Jerusalem. However, a recent podcast, "Floor Generals," has identified four clubs considered frontrunners for these lucrative deals. Michalis Stefanou, a commentator on the podcast, emphasized that while nothing is official until announced, four clubs are significantly ahead of the competition. Stefanou indicated that Dubai, Valencia, PAOK Thessaloniki, and Paris are the teams most likely to secure franchise contracts, with PAOK, having recently changed ownership and invested heavily, being in the strongest position according to sources close to the league management. Stefanou's assessment suggests that after these four, the next most likely candidates are Virtus Bologna and Rome, followed by London Lions and Virtus Bologna, with no mention of Hapoel Tel Aviv or Hapoel Jerusalem. This omission raises concerns about the Israeli clubs' prospects in securing a franchise contract.
