Israeli Basketball Teams Face Uncertainty in EuroLeague Franchise Race

Two Israeli basketball clubs, Hapoel Tel Aviv and Hapoel Jerusalem, may be facing an uphill battle to secure coveted EuroLeague franchise contracts. While numerous teams have applied for permanent licenses as part of a league format change, and 12 have advanced to the next selection stage, the status of the Israeli teams remains uncertain.

A recent podcast, "Floor Generals," discussed the race for the eight available franchise spots, identifying four clubs considered frontrunners. According to podcast host Michalis Stefanou, Dubai, Valencia, PAOK Thessaloniki, and Paris are the most likely candidates to receive the contracts, with PAOK reportedly in the strongest position due to recent ownership changes and significant investment.

Stefanou indicated that after these four, the next strongest contenders are Paris, Rome, and Naples, followed by London Lions and Virtus Bologna. Notably, Hapoel Tel Aviv and Hapoel Jerusalem were not mentioned among the leading contenders, raising concerns about their prospects in securing a franchise contract. Stefanou emphasized that until an official announcement is made, nothing is certain, but the omission of the Israeli teams from the list of strong candidates suggests a challenging situation for them in this pursuit.
