EuroLeague CEO Hints at New License Applicants Amid Expansion Plans

The EuroLeague is preparing for a significant expansion, potentially increasing from 20 to 24 teams starting with the 2027-28 season. This expansion includes adding more licensed teams, and EuroLeague CEO Jordi Bertomeu has revealed that 12 applications have been received, totaling 800 million euros in license fees. This figure is an increase from previous reports of 11 applications and 700 million euros.

While Bertomeu did not name the specific clubs that submitted applications, his update has fueled speculation that Hapoel Jerusalem may be among the new contenders. This comes after Hapoel Jerusalem announced two weeks prior their intention to submit a binding, high-value bid for a permanent EuroLeague license, following an initial framework offer. The potential inclusion of Hapoel Jerusalem would mark a third Israeli team in the premier European basketball competition, alongside Hapoel Tel Aviv and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

In addition to the expansion news, Bertomeu addressed the growing presence of the NBA in Europe. He expressed the EuroLeague's openness to a mutually beneficial partnership with NBA Europe but also issued a clear warning. "We are ready for cooperation with NBA Europe that will bear fruit for both sides, but if we do not have a deal with them, we are also fully prepared to compete against them," Bertomeu stated, indicating a firm stance on the league's market position.
