Palestinian Labor Union Discusses Preparations for Legislative Elections
The executive office of the Palestinian Labor Struggle Union convened to discuss preparations for upcoming legislative elections. The meeting, attended by Dr. Ahmed Majdalani, Secretary-General of the Palestinian Popular Struggle Front, and Mohammed Alloush, Secretary-General of the Union, focused on the union's participation in the elections as part of a coalition list aimed at strengthening democratic, social, and labor-focused forces.
Dr. Majdalani emphasized the significance of the legislative elections as a national and political imperative, requiring serious preparation from democratic and social forces. He stressed the importance of electoral programs reflecting Palestinian societal priorities, particularly the concerns of workers facing increasing burdens due to difficult economic conditions, the ongoing occupation, and its impact on employment and social stability. Majdalani stated that the cause of the working class is integral to the national struggle, not a separate union issue, and that defending workers' rights, dignity, employment opportunities, social protection, and union rights are fundamental to social justice and any serious democratic national program.
Majdalani called for developing a political and social discourse more closely aligned with the interests of workers and popular sectors, moving beyond narrow demands to an integrated vision for economic and social development. He urged the union to continue defending the Palestinian labor movement, expanding its presence, strengthening democratic union work, and building broader relationships with other unions and societal forces to make workers' issues a genuine priority in national and electoral discussions.
Alloush affirmed the union's commitment to organizational and field preparations for the elections, aiming to develop a clear program representing the interests of the working class and popular sectors, emphasizing the right to work, fair wages, social protection, and union rights. He views electoral participation as an opportunity to enhance the political and social presence of workers and advocate for fairer economic policies. The union plans to intensify outreach to workers and community groups to understand their priorities and needs, formulating an electoral program addressing unemployment, poverty, informal labor, social protection, and union rights.
The executive office decided to form field-based labor and union committees to oversee preparations and follow up on upcoming events across various governorates and sectors, under the supervision of the executive and administrative councils. The meeting also stressed the continuation of union struggle to protect workers' rights and gains, expand union work, and enhance worker participation in political and national life.
