Comedian Dieudonné Sentenced to 6 Months House Arrest for Praising Terrorism

French comedian Dieudonné M'Bala M'Bala has been sentenced to six months of house arrest with an electronic monitoring bracelet by the Paris Correctional Court. The sentence also includes a 5,000 euro fine and a three-year ban from holding public office. The conviction stems primarily from a video posted on X on October 7, 2024, the first anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel. In the video, viewed approximately one million times, Dieudonné described the date as "wonderful, extraordinary, magical." Although he later claimed this referred to his daughter's birthday, the court rejected this explanation, finding that the statement presented the October 7 attacks in a favorable light.

Dieudonné's defense had argued "black humor" and his status as a comedian, not a political figure, during the June trial. However, the court determined his remarks crossed the line of acceptable free expression. The ruling also cited another video posted after a fire at a synagogue in La Grande-Motte in August 2024. In that instance, Dieudonné suggested the attack might be a response to perceived anti-Jewish "hatred" and "racism" in France since October 7.

Additionally, Dieudonné was convicted of public insult for addressing Laurent Nuñez, the former Paris police prefect, with vulgar language in a video after one of his shows was banned. This latest conviction adds to Dieudonné's extensive criminal record, which includes 34 previous convictions. Notably, in 2015, he received a suspended prison sentence for praising terrorism after posting "Je me sens Charlie Coulibaly" following the Charlie Hebdo and Hyper Cacher attacks.

In addition to his house arrest, fine, and ban from office, Dieudonné must pay 1,000 euros to the European Jewish Organization and a symbolic one euro to Laurent Nuñez. The prosecution had initially sought a one-year prison sentence.
