OFI Crete Completes Remarkable Rise to European League Group Stage

OFI Crete, a club that was playing in Greece's third division just over a decade ago, is set to make its debut in the group stage of a European competition when it hosts Hoffenheim in the Europa League on Thursday. This marks a significant milestone for the Cretan club, which has undergone a dramatic transformation.

The club's journey from near collapse to European football is a testament to its resilience. In March 2015, OFI withdrew from the top Greek league due to a severe crisis. The following summer, they restarted in the third division. Within three years, they achieved two promotions, returning to the Super League. In October 2018, Greek-American businessman Michael Bouzis became the majority shareholder and president, stabilizing the club and initiating its rebuilding process.

OFI boasts a more storied past as well, reaching its peak under legendary Dutch coach Eugen Gerard. In 1986, they finished second in the Greek league, and the following season, they won their first Greek Cup. Their European exploits included eliminating Slavia Prague in the 1993/94 UEFA Cup and narrowly losing to Atlético Madrid in the round of 16.

Last season saw a resurgence, with OFI winning the Greek Cup for the second time in their history, defeating PAOK 3-2 in a dramatic final. They followed this by winning their first Greek Super Cup in August, defeating AEK Athens on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Their Europa League qualifying campaign was dominant, with a 5-0 aggregate victory over CSKA Sofia, a team that had previously eliminated Maccabi Tel Aviv.

The current season has started strongly, with OFI securing a prestigious 1-0 away win against Olympiacos, their first at the Piraeus stadium in 36 years. The winning goal was scored by Kénan Kodro, whose father, Maho Kodro, is a former Barcelona and Real Sociedad striker who finished his playing career at Maccabi Tel Aviv. The team, managed by Christos Kontis, is noted for its strong defense, entering the match against Hoffenheim on an impressive run of clean sheets.

OFI Crete's European opponents in the group stage include Rennes, Bayer Leverkusen, Anderlecht, Benfica, Sturm Graz, and Lech Poznań. They are scheduled to face Hapoel Be'er Sheva on November 5th. For now, the focus is on the significant challenge of hosting Hoffenheim, representing the culmination of their remarkable comeback.
