OFI Crete Completes Remarkable Rise From Amateur Status to Europa League

OFI Crete, a club from Heraklion, Greece, will make its debut in the group stage of a European competition when it hosts Hoffenheim in the Europa League on Thursday. This marks a significant milestone for the club, which less than a decade ago, in March 2015, withdrew from the top Greek league due to severe financial difficulties and restarted in the third division.

By the following summer, OFI Crete began its climb back, achieving promotion twice in three years to return to the Super League. In October 2018, Greek-American businessman Michalis Bousis became the majority shareholder and president, stabilizing the club and initiating its rebuilding process.

The club boasts a richer history, having finished second in the Greek league in 1986 and winning its first Greek Cup in 1987. OFI Crete also had a notable European run in the 1993-94 UEFA Cup, eliminating Slavia Prague and defeating Atlético Madrid before being eliminated in the Round of 16.

Last season saw a resurgence, with OFI Crete winning the Greek Cup for the second time in its history, and the first since 1987, after a dramatic 3-2 final victory over PAOK. This triumph secured their place in the Europa League playoffs. They also won their first Greek Super Cup in August, defeating AEK Athens on penalties.

In the Europa League qualifiers, OFI Crete dominated CSKA Sofia with a 5-0 aggregate score. The team is currently in strong form, having secured their first away win against Olympiacos in 36 years with a 1-0 victory last Saturday. They also enter the match against Hoffenheim on a streak of games without conceding a goal.

OFI Crete's current squad includes experienced players like Taxiarhis Fountas, who was the team's top scorer last season, and Andreas Bouchalakis, a former Olympiacos player with extensive European experience. Manager Christos Kontis has implemented a tactical system often featuring three center-backs and wing-backs, and the team has been defensively solid. The club is scheduled to face Hapoel Be'er Sheva in the Europa League on November 5th.
