OFI Crete Completes Remarkable Rise to European League Group Stage

OFI Crete, a club that was in Greece's third division just over a decade ago, is set to make its debut in the European League group stage on Thursday when it hosts Hoffenheim. This marks a significant milestone for the Cretan club, which has undergone a dramatic transformation.

In March 2015, OFI faced a severe crisis and withdrew from the top league. The following summer, they restarted in the third division. Within three years, they achieved two promotions to return to the Super League. In October 2018, Greek-American businessman Michael Bousis became the majority shareholder and president, stabilizing the club and initiating its rebuilding process.

OFI boasts a richer history as well, reaching its peak under Dutch coach Eugene Gerard in the late 1980s, finishing second in the Greek league in 1986 and winning the Greek Cup for the first time the following season. In the 1993/94 UEFA Cup, they eliminated Slavia Prague and famously defeated Atletico Madrid before being knocked out in the Round of 16.

Last season saw a resurgence, with OFI winning the Greek Cup for the second time and their first since 1987, defeating PAOK in a dramatic final. They also secured their first Greek Super Cup this August, beating AEK Athens on penalties. Their European journey continued with a dominant 5-0 aggregate victory over CSKA Sofia, a team that had eliminated Maccabi Tel Aviv, to reach the current stage.

The current season has started strongly, with OFI securing a prestigious 1-0 away win against Olympiacos last Saturday, their first at that stadium in 36 years. The winning goal was scored by Kenaan Kodro, whose father, Maho Kodro, is a former Barcelona and Real Sociedad striker who finished his playing career at Maccabi Tel Aviv. The team, managed by Christos Kontis, is noted for its strong defense, entering the Hoffenheim match on a streak of clean sheets.

OFI's European League opponents include Rennes, Bayer Leverkusen, Anderlecht, Benfica, Sturm Graz, and Lech Poznan. They are scheduled to face Hapoel Be'er Sheva on November 5. For now, the focus is on the significant match against Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, representing the culmination of OFI's impressive journey back to prominence.
