IDF Warrior and Musician Overcomes Homelessness, Finds Purpose
Omri Goren, a 30-year-old musician and creator, has shared his extraordinary life story, detailing a childhood marked by abandonment, homelessness, and a brush with the criminal underworld, ultimately leading to a profound transformation through military service and a return to religious observance.
Goren's non-Jewish father left shortly after his birth, leaving his Jewish mother to raise him and his sister. This absence deeply affected Goren, who yearned for paternal connection, recounting a brief, cherished visit from his father at age 10 where he desperately sought boundaries. The father's departure after this visit sent Goren into a downward spiral during his teenage years. He became estranged from home, resorting to sleeping on the streets in Jerusalem and struggling with hunger, even contemplating stealing food.
His path veered towards criminal activity, including drug trafficking, and he faced imminent arrest. However, a youth officer intervened, convincing Goren to change course. This intervention led Goren to enlist in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), where he served as a combat soldier, officer, and team commander in the elite Yahalom unit. The IDF provided him with stability, including housing as a lone soldier.
Following his military service, Goren pursued his passion for music, which had been a solace throughout his difficult youth. His life took another significant turn on October 7th, when he was called up to assist in the recovery and handling of bodies of victims from the Hamas massacre. This experience, though harrowing, solidified his decision to embrace religious observance and find meaning in his work.
He described the immense emotional toll of his role in Gaza, processing the remains of fallen soldiers, and found solace in the belief that he was performing a sacred duty. A particularly poignant moment occurred when he met with bereaved parents, whose gratitude for his team's respectful handling of their sons' bodies led to an emotional breakdown. Today, Goren is a family man and a respected artist, still hoping for a connection with his estranged father in Australia, whom he continues to reach out to.
