IDF Cuts Reserve Force Numbers Days Before Deployment to Syrian Border
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has reduced the number of reservists assigned to a Carmel Brigade unit just one day before their scheduled deployment for an extended mission along the southern Syrian border. Approximately 600 reservists had gathered for training for the roughly 110-day operational tour.
According to reservists in one of the brigade's battalions, a directive was received to decrease the personnel quota after the training concluded. Dozens of reservists who reported for duty were informed their call-up orders were canceled and they would be sent home, while others would remain to cover the same scope of missions with fewer personnel.
A commander within the brigade described the decision as a surprise, stating, "The big army decided it's reducing the reserve days in the battalion." He expressed concern that the workload would now fall on fewer soldiers, increasing the burden on those remaining. "When there are fewer shoulders under the stretcher, the load sits on fewer people. The scope of missions remains the same, because they haven't changed in the sector due to the decision - I simply have fewer shoulders," he explained.
The commander also highlighted the problematic nature of informing soldiers who had made significant personal and professional adjustments to fulfill their duty, only to be told their service was no longer needed. "There is a problem with our commitment to them. Soldiers who left their lives, their work, their families, and now we have to come and tell them 'Listen guys, there's nothing to do, there are no reserve days, we have to release you, go home,'" he said.
He further questioned the timing and planning, suggesting that if the reduced numbers were known in advance, he would have reported an inability to fulfill the missions professionally. He pointed to the Syrian border as a potential "soft underbelly" of the country, despite its current quiet status, noting the IDF's strength in other arenas like Lebanon, Gaza, and Judea and Samaria.
The IDF Spokesperson's Unit responded that the allocation of reserve duty slots is determined by missions and needs. They attributed the unnecessary summons of reservists for this mission to human error and expressed regret. The IDF emphasized its appreciation for the contribution and commitment of reservists to the nation's security.
