IDF Reserve Soldiers Push for Deeper Operations in Syria Amid Border Tensions
While Israel's security apparatus is focused on the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran, a constant tension persists on the Syrian front. Terrorist groups are attempting to establish a presence in the Syrian Golan Heights, particularly in the southern sector. Recently, Division 210, commanded by Brigadier General Yair Palai, concluded a large-scale exercise simulating attacks on IDF posts deep within Syrian territory and along the border, including the Hermon area.
Reserve officers serving in the sector have criticized the division's limited initiatives, arguing for expanded operational activity within Syrian villages and surrounding areas to push back hostile intentions. However, a senior officer countered that while he welcomes the reservists' high motivation despite recent strains, extensive operations are indeed occurring in complex areas designated by the political echelon. He stated that IDF forces operate from ten posts in Syrian territory, conducting round-the-clock activities based on intelligence assessments.
One such operation, approximately two and a half weeks ago, involved an attack on a suspect intending to plant explosive devices, resulting in an injury rather than a fatality. Simultaneously, significant arrests yielded intelligence about activities in the region. "What is happening today in Syria is beyond imagination and any activity we thought of - the activity is non-stop," a senior officer remarked. He noted that many reservists, accustomed to operations in less populated areas like Gaza and Lebanon, express a desire for more aggressive actions, even suggesting capturing Damascus.
The officer explained that IDF raids now extend further from the border than the distance from the Lebanese border to Sidon. For instance, Beit Jann in Syria is 11 kilometers from the border, and reservists would ideally patrol there daily. He assured that classified operations are underway to serve Israel's security interests, drawing parallels to the IDF's selective operational presence in Lebanon and Gaza. He highlighted that 14 terrorists were killed in three separate raids in the Beit Jann area.
Another concern for Israeli security is the tension with Turkey in the Syrian theater. Turkey has attempted to establish a presence within Syria, approximately 80 kilometers from the Turkish-Syrian border. The Israeli Air Force has targeted these preparations at a Syrian military base, and surveillance of Turkish intentions continues. The senior officer concluded by stating that Israel maintains freedom of operation in the region, with forces deployed at the same level ahead of the upcoming holiday.
