IDF Reserve Battalion Commander Warns 30% Troop Cuts in Lebanon Harm Operational Readiness

The commander of an IDF reserve battalion operating in a sensitive sector along the Lebanon border has issued a warning about a nearly 30% reduction in the battalion's authorized manpower, which he says severely undermines operational readiness and creates critical shortages in essential roles. In a strongly worded letter sent to the Deputy Chief of Staff, Northern Command Chief, Head of Personnel Directorate, and Head of Operations Division, the battalion commander detailed how the cuts, based on the number of soldiers who reported at the start of the deployment, have led to the cancellation of positions for soldiers who planned to join later due to work, studies, or other reasons.

The commander highlighted that the reduction has left the unit without key personnel such as cooks, drivers, squad leaders, and medics, causing a severe manpower crisis that impairs mission execution and places commanders in untenable ethical and command dilemmas. He criticized the decision as arbitrary and lacking a thorough assessment of the unit's needs, planning, and commitments to soldiers.

He also warned of the negative impact on reservists' motivation, noting that many canceled family vacations and arranged work absences only to have their call-up orders revoked at the last minute, which he described as an insult to those who prioritize service. The letter expressed concern about the long-term consequences for the reserve system, questioning how commanders will be able to compel soldiers to report for future deployments if the army inconsistently calls up troops.

The battalion commander concluded by emphasizing that while the soldiers have repeatedly answered the call out of a sense of duty, the current cuts stretch the unit's command and ethical capacity beyond its limits.
