New Israeli Standards Tighten Rules on Food-Contact Plastic Products

Israel has implemented new, stricter standards for plastic products that come into contact with food, including beverage bottles, food containers, and reusable plasticware. These regulations, adopted from European directives under the "What's Good for Europe" track, took effect on September 16, following an 18-month transition period. The changes primarily focus on the purity of raw materials used in both new and recycled plastics, demanding higher standards and risk assessments for unintended substances like breakdown products or manufacturing contaminants.

The updated rules also address reusable plastic items, requiring manufacturers to provide clear usage instructions and warnings regarding wear and tear, such as cracks or discoloration, which can impact material safety. This means reusable containers are not intended for indefinite use, and signs of aging should be considered in relation to food safety.

Additionally, the regulations align with stricter European limits on Bisphenol A (BPA). While the main transition period for general purity standards ended September 16, 2026, the specific restrictions on BPA in food-contact products, including certain can linings, had an earlier transition deadline of July 20, 2026. Products legally on the market before these dates can continue to be sold until their existing stock is depleted, ensuring a gradual market shift rather than an immediate removal of goods.

It is important to note that these updated standards apply specifically to products imported or manufactured under the European regulatory track. Not all plastic items in Israel are affected by this immediate change; the impact will be gradual as older stock is sold and new products adhering to the revised regulations enter the market. Consumers are advised to check reusable items for signs of wear and tear, especially those frequently exposed to heat and washing, and consider replacement if damage is evident.
