Teenager Paralyzed After Pool Accident Returns to School

Yael Leib, a 15-year-old girl, experienced a life-altering accident when she suffered a severe neck injury after jumping into her home swimming pool. In a matter of seconds, she lost the ability to move her limbs, experiencing a frightening sudden paralysis in her arms and legs. Leib was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery on her C5 vertebra, which was at the center of her complex injury.

Leib is currently undergoing a long and challenging recovery process. "My sensation in my arms and legs has improved, but it's dynamic," she stated in an interview with the program "HaOlam HaBoker." Following the urgent surgery and initial treatment, Leib began a difficult phase of returning to reality, involving months of extensive rehabilitation at the Loewenstein Rehabilitation Hospital.

Despite the obstacles, including the feeling that her independence was "taken away in an instant," the 15-year-old has shown great strength. She has returned to her high school studies, using a wheelchair. "I received the best support system at the new high school," she said, adding, "My friends have always been with me, they are the best I could ask for."

Even with the dramatic change and new physical limitations, Leib's creative spirit and aspirations remain intact. She refuses to let the wheelchair stop her and looks to the future with confidence and determination. "My dream is to be an actress and to create," she shared.
