Veteran News Anchor Sues Channel 13 for Age Discrimination

Veteran Israeli news anchor Eli Rachlin, who worked for Channel 13 for 23 years, has filed a lawsuit against the network and its parent company, Reshet Media, seeking to halt his dismissal. Rachlin, 60, claims his termination is a result of age discrimination, arguing that the stated reasons of "efficiency processes and changes within the company" are a pretext for unlawful firing.

The lawsuit, filed with the Tel Aviv Regional Labor Court, alleges that the decision to dismiss Rachlin was made suddenly on the eve of Rosh Hashanah without valid cause. Rachlin further contends that he was not given an opportunity to present his case before the termination decision was finalized.

Rachlin's legal team asserts that Channel 13's CEO, Tali Ben-Ovadia, made disparaging remarks about his age in the past, referring to him as "old" and occupying the "older anchor" slot. These comments, Rachlin argues, demonstrate that his age was a primary factor in the decision to replace him and remove him from the air.

Represented by attorneys Sigal Pa'il and Yifat Tabor, Rachlin rejects the company's claim that the layoffs are part of economic streamlining. He describes his removal from the screen and journalistic work as "occupational death" and warns of "irreparable damage to his professional reputation" built over two decades. Rachlin is requesting an injunction to prevent the termination from taking effect and to overturn the decision.

Channel 13 and Reshet Media have not yet filed their defense statements, so their arguments regarding the dismissal and its circumstances have not been presented to the court.
