Traditional Bicycles Lead Holiday Demand in Israel, Data Shows
As Yom Kippur approaches, data from the Israeli classifieds site Yad2 reveals that traditional bicycles remain the most sought-after items in the cycling category, accounting for over half of all searches. While electric scooters and bikes have seen significant growth in searches, traditional bicycles dominate the market.
Between August and October, Yad2 observed a 22% to 29% increase in searches for electric bikes and scooters, a 19% rise for regular scooters, and a 16% increase for traditional bicycles compared to other months. However, the supply side shows a stronger response for traditional bikes, with a 23% jump in listings, compared to a more modest 8% to 9% increase for electric models.
Overall search volume indicates traditional bicycles capture 53% of the market, followed by electric scooters at 22%, electric bikes at 16%, and regular scooters at 9%. Although 'electric scooter' is the most popular single search term (20.2%), surpassing 'bicycle' (17.7%), traditional bicycles collectively lead by a wide margin. Specific searches for road, mountain, city, and folding bikes, as well as full suspension models and parts for electric bikes, also highlight a diverse market.
Sima Azulai, CEO of Second-Hand Real Estate and Products at Yad2, noted that despite the rise in electric options, traditional bicycles still hold the majority interest. The data suggests a varied market, from daily-use bikes to specialized models.
Savings on used items are substantial. For electric bikes, used models average around 1,948 shekels, compared to 3,000-3,100 shekels for new ones, a difference of over 1,000 shekels. Electric scooters show a similar gap. Traditional bicycles offer a smaller saving, with used averaging 443 shekels and new 861 shekels, making them accessible across budgets.
Bicycle repair shops are warning consumers to check their bikes several days before Yom Kippur to avoid breakdowns. Key checks include the helmet and brakes, ensuring the helmet fits properly and brakes are functional with no worn pads or leaks. Chain tension and tire condition are also crucial, with tires needing proper inflation. Bolts should be tightened, and the chain and gears lubricated with appropriate oil, not WD40. For evening rides, lights are essential. For children's bikes, seat and handlebar height must be adjusted, and children should understand how to use the brakes. For electric bikes and scooters, users are advised not to overcharge batteries and to seek professional repair for any frame damage, as DIY fixes can be dangerous.
