UK Sanctions on Israeli Settlements May Not Take Effect
New sanctions announced by the United Kingdom against Israel may not be implemented, according to the Israeli newspaper Maariv. The practical application of these sanctions is not expected to begin until next year due to complex legal and technical procedures. London requires an estimated six to nine months to develop the necessary regulations to differentiate companies associated with settlements from other Israeli businesses. Consequently, the sanctions will not be in effect before the upcoming Israeli elections.
Furthermore, the UK might reconsider its decision, potentially preventing the sanctions from taking effect at all, if the current or a future Israeli government alters its policy regarding settlements. Maariv reports that the UK is intentionally leaving this possibility open for Israel. The ultimate scope of the restrictions will be contingent upon the actions of the subsequent Israeli government.
