Israel's Defense Minister and Opposition Leader Clash Over Gaza War Strategy

A sharp dispute has erupted between Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz and Ofer Winter, chairman of the "Am Israel" party, following the elimination of Hamas's Rafah Brigade commander. Winter questioned how Hamas could still maintain a brigade in Rafah and operate in Gaza after three years of war.

Katz responded forcefully, stating Winter was "not updated." He asserted that Rafah and 70% of Gaza are now devoid of residents, Hamas tunnels are being destroyed, and the IDF occupies dozens of positions around the remaining 30% of the Strip, creating an unprecedented security zone protecting Israeli communities and eliminating terrorists weekly. Katz also mentioned that a ceasefire led to the release of all hostages, with the US and allied nations committed to disarming Hamas and destroying its tunnels.

Katz further criticized Winter's "distorted criticism" of the government and IDF, comparing it to that of former officials and pundits with outdated security views who ignore achievements in Iran, Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria to attack the government. He suggested Israel does not need more of this type of commentary, expressing concern for future scenarios.

Winter retorted that while there have been achievements in the war, there has been no decisive victory and no "voluntary emigration" of Gazans. He revealed that Katz had offered him the role of establishing an emigration administration, which he accepted believing it was essential for victory, but demanded real authority. Winter accused Katz of evading the issue after he presented a detailed plan, claiming Katz did not establish the administration or even begin the process, and discarded a "blank check" from the US administration.

Winter also alleged that Katz is installing magnetometers to appease Hamas and allowing hundreds of supply trucks into Gaza daily for the same organization that committed the October 7th atrocities. He concluded by questioning why, three years after October 7th, the directive to eliminate Hamas has not been given, and urged Katz to abandon current concepts and achieve a decisive victory.
