Palestinian-American Journalist Arrested Near Bethlehem on Suspicion of Espionage

The story · English

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) arrested Nakaa Hamed, a journalist holding both Palestinian and American citizenship, on Tuesday evening at an impromptu checkpoint near the settlement of Tekoa, southeast of Bethlehem. IDF sources stated that Hamed works for an Iranian entity and is suspected of collaborating with the enemy, possibly engaging in espionage.

Hamed's family claimed she was apprehended while returning from covering alleged harm to Palestinians in the West Bank. They also accused her of being targeted by an Israeli incitement campaign following her reporting on events in the village of Kusra.

Press TV, an Iranian outlet, reported that Hamed was traveling with a camera crew when Israeli forces stopped them at the checkpoint. After searching the crew, soldiers detained Hamed and released the photographers. Press TV also alleged that Hamed was injured in December when Israeli forces fired rubber bullets while she was reporting live from the Qalandia refugee camp.

According to Press TV, Hamed works for the outlet, which also disseminates reports in Hebrew via Telegram.
