Israeli and Lebanese Envoys Meet in Washington Amid Stalled Talks

Israel's Ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, is scheduled to meet his Lebanese counterpart at the State Department in Washington on Tuesday afternoon, according to i24NEWS. This meeting follows the postponement of the latest round of discussions between Israel and Lebanon.

The two diplomats are expected to discuss recent regional developments and the continued implementation of a trilateral framework involving Israel, Lebanon, and the United States. A U.S. State Department official announced the meeting on Saturday, stating it would focus on "the continued implementation of the trilateral framework, which remains the only applicable mechanism to restore Lebanon's sovereignty and guarantee Israel's security."

The official also indicated that the next official round of talks between the parties will take place in Rome in October. This meeting occurs as Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has recently tempered expectations regarding a potential diplomatic breakthrough with Israel. Speaking in Nabatieh, southern Lebanon, on Saturday, he stated that "there are currently no new negotiations with Israel."

President Aoun reiterated Lebanon's priorities, including an Israeli withdrawal, the return of prisoners and displaced persons, and reconstruction, characterizing these as "national principles" to which Lebanon remains committed. Despite these statements, the planned Washington meeting signifies the continuation of a U.S.-mediated channel of communication between the two countries ahead of the official talks resuming in Italy in October.
