Israel and Germany Test Advanced Long-Range Drone System

Israel and Germany have successfully tested a long-range loitering munition, a significant step in their deepening defense cooperation. The demonstration, held in early September 2026, showcased the SkyStriker system, known as Sharkerk under a joint project between Israel's Elbit Systems and Germany's Deal Defense. The system proved its capability to autonomously detect, track, and engage targets. A key feature tested was the successful transfer of control over a distance of 80 kilometers. The SkyStriker was launched from a special container for reconnaissance and observation before striking a simulated target. It also demonstrated interoperability with the SkyLark 1 vertical takeoff and landing reconnaissance drone.

With a range exceeding 200 kilometers and an endurance of over two hours, the SkyStriker boasts a low acoustic and thermal signature due to its electric motor. Developers highlight its suitability for precision strikes against diverse targets, including anti-aircraft systems and mobile military assets. The munition's versatility is further emphasized by its ability to be launched from various platforms, such as ground vehicles, specialized containers, aircraft, and the Euro-PULS launchers used by German and other European forces.

Gunnar Pappert, head of Deal Defense's ground division, stated that the successful demonstration confirmed the system's technological maturity and versatility. He added that the collaboration with Elbit Systems aims to establish a foundation for producing these systems directly in Germany. Elbit Systems views the German partnership as a crucial step for the project's expansion in Europe. Marian Rachow, CEO of Elbit Systems Germany, expressed the company's intention to offer the system to various countries based on their specific needs. Rachow noted this demonstration as a milestone for "Rooster" in Europe and towards serial production in Germany. The partners anticipate that this cooperation will help meet the growing European demand for autonomous systems, potentially leading to manufacturing facilities in Germany for assembly, integration, and certification.
