Palestinian Forgiveness Initiative Erases Millions in Debt

A grassroots initiative called "For the Sake of God" has gained significant traction across Palestinian communities, encouraging individuals and businesses to forgive debts and write off financial obligations. The movement, which began organically, has seen participants voluntarily relinquish millions of shekels in owed money, with the total amount waived reaching approximately 65 million shekels as of the report's publication. The initiative was sparked when Ala Al-Rimawi learned of a teacher's financial struggles and contacted her creditor, who agreed to forgive her debt. This act inspired Al-Rimawi to broaden the concept, leading to widespread participation.

Numerous cases have been documented, including a business owner in Ramallah who forgave debts totaling 250,000 shekels, and a pharmacy in Bethlehem that waived over 20,000 shekels. In Salfit, Mustafa Khalid Abu Leil forgave about 40,000 shekels despite his own financial difficulties. Dr. Taha Hajja in Hebron renounced checks worth 62,400 shekels, stating his decision was "for the sake of God and in memory of his mother." The initiative has also included smaller acts of generosity, such as a refugee in Jenin camp forgiving a $10 debt to a daily customer, an elderly woman selling gold to help another, and a child forgiving his father a 2,000 shekel debt.

Al-Rimawi attributes the initiative's rapid spread to the severe financial hardship faced by Palestinians, exacerbated by declining job opportunities, low wages, and economic pressures in both the West Bank and Gaza. Official statistics indicate an 8% economic contraction in the West Bank during the first quarter of 2026 and a 28% unemployment rate in 2025. The movement has extended beyond the West Bank, with reports of similar acts of forgiveness emerging from Gaza, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.

Al-Rimawi hopes the "For the Sake of God" campaign will become a sustained social practice, expanding to every village, camp, and city to help those in debt and offer them a fresh start. The initiative encompasses the burning of checks, the cancellation of debt ledgers, and individual and familial waivers.
