Woman Recounts Near-Death Experience and Second Opinion That Saved Her Life

Daphna Tzuri, an Israeli woman, recently marked 20 years since a life-altering medical ordeal in 2006. At the time, she was diagnosed with a massive 10x8 cm tumor on her thymus gland, pressing against vital organs including her heart and lungs. Doctors gave her a grim prognosis, suggesting her chest might be opened and closed without removing the tumor, and her friends gathered for a 'shiva' or mourning period while she was still alive.

Adding to the emotional turmoil, Tzuri's mother was also dying of cancer at the same time, and Tzuri concealed her own potentially fatal diagnosis to avoid causing her mother further distress. The day before her scheduled surgery, Tzuri entered the hospital, bracing for the worst, and requested sedation before entering the operating room.

During the surgery, doctors were surprised to find the tumor was not attached to any vital structures as initially believed, allowing it to be removed like a "pear." However, upon waking, Tzuri was recommended for immediate chemotherapy. She refused, not out of distrust for doctors, but due to a strong intuition that she needed a second opinion before undergoing such aggressive treatment.

This second opinion proved crucial. The new medical assessment suggested the initial diagnosis might be incorrect and recommended delaying treatment. Tzuri reflects that if she had proceeded with chemotherapy without this second look, she might have undergone unnecessary and harmful treatment. She emphasizes that while medicine saved her life through diagnosis and surgery, the possibility of human error necessitates seeking additional opinions.

Tzuri's story later intersected with that of the late Amir Fai Guttman, who also faced a life-threatening diagnosis. Guttman, who planned a musical based on his experience, wanted to collaborate with Tzuri, noting the striking similarities in their initial situations. Tzuri, who survived her ordeal and now celebrates the anniversary of her second chance at life, urges others to ask questions and seek multiple perspectives when facing serious medical decisions, stating that sometimes "an entire life" can lie between diagnoses.
