Type 2 diabetes affects approximately half a million people in Israel and is largely influenced by lifestyle choices, though some risk factors are unchangeable. The condition arises when the body's cells become resistant to insulin, hindering their ability to absorb glucose for energy. This leads to elevated blood glucose levels, prompting the pancreas to produce more insulin. Over time, this can exhaust the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, causing insulin levels to drop and blood sugar to rise, potentially damaging tissues and organs.
Unlike Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease where the body stops producing insulin entirely, Type 2 diabetes involves insulin resistance and sometimes decreased insulin production. Unchangeable risk factors for Type 2 diabetes include age, genetics, and ethnicity. The risk increases significantly with age, particularly after 45, as pancreatic beta cells and liver cells degrade. Genetic mutations can also increase susceptibility, with a family history of Type 2 diabetes raising the risk by 25% to 69%. Certain ethnic minority groups also face a disproportionately higher risk.
Modifiable lifestyle factors are crucial in the onset of Type 2 diabetes. Overweight and obesity are primary risk factors, as excess body fat increases fatty acid levels in the blood, impairing liver function and directly causing insulin resistance through a process called lipotoxicity. This condition damages cellular mitochondria, reducing the cells' ability to respond to insulin. High-calorie diets, excessive intake of saturated and trans fats, processed foods, sugary drinks, and a lack of physical activity contribute to obesity.
Reducing the risk of Type 2 diabetes involves adopting healthier lifestyle habits. Gradual, sustainable changes in diet and exercise are more effective than extreme diets or intense workouts, especially for those new to regular physical activity. By identifying and managing modifiable risk factors, individuals can significantly lower their chances of developing this condition.
