Documentary Explores American Israelis' Identity Crisis Post-October 7
Yael Bar Zohar's documentary, "American Sabras," examines the profound impact of the October 7th attacks on Israelis living in the United States. What was once perceived as a safe haven has become a complex arena of identity, alienation, and rising antisemitism for many.
Beyond the daily fear and anxiety, this challenging period has also fostered community cohesion, a reconnection with roots, and a search for belonging among American Israelis. Bar Zohar shared in an interview that the film highlights the participants' desire to forge a stronger connection between Jews raised abroad and Israel.
According to Bar Zohar, the ongoing crisis has underscored the critical importance of the bond between Israelis in their homeland and those living overseas. "This war has clarified for us how small the world really is and how much we need each other," she stated. She also noted a prevalent sentiment among Israelis in the U.S., observing, "Many Israelis miss home," suggesting a potential desire for return.
