Trial Begins for Man Accused of Poisoning Baby Food in Israel
Prosecutors have filed charges against a 41-year-old man, Yan Shemla, in connection with the poisoning of baby food jars in Jerusalem. Shemla, a resident of Beersheba, is accused of opening jars of "Prunuk" brand fruit puree in supermarkets and injecting them with the prescription tranquilizer Klonazepam, also known as "Clonex" in Israel. According to investigators, each jar contained a dose equivalent to 17 prescription pills, likely in liquid form. Shemla allegedly carried out these acts at two branches of the "Zol U've'gadol" supermarket chain in Jerusalem, one near the entrance to the city and another near the Mahane Yehuda market.
The full indictment has not yet been released, and it appears Shemla did not confess. Investigators are currently unaware of his motive. The prosecution has dismissed theories of nationalistic or anti-religious motives, noting Shemla is Jewish and that the supermarkets cater to a diverse clientele. A theory that Shemla acted out of animosity towards the supermarket chain to damage its reputation was also not substantiated.
Shemla faces charges including five counts of "using dangerous poisonous substances" and five counts of "assaulting minors," stemming from five children being hospitalized after consuming the contaminated puree. Two additional "poisoning" incidents were captured on surveillance footage. The prosecution's case relies heavily on video evidence showing Shemla's presence in the stores before the tainted jars appeared.
It remains unclear whether Shemla was employed or why he traveled to Jerusalem. While Shemla was prescribed tranquilizers and his lawyer stated he suffers from manic-depressive psychosis, psychiatric evaluations have not found him to be legally insane or unfit to stand trial.
