Israel Electric Corporation Completes $58 Million Underground Substation in North Tel Aviv

The Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) has completed a new underground electricity substation in northern Tel Aviv, an investment totaling approximately NIS 217 million (about $58 million USD). The project, which took four years to complete, aims to strengthen the power grid and improve the reliability and quality of electricity supply to residents, businesses, and institutions in northern Tel Aviv and Ramat Aviv, including Tel Aviv University.

The new substation is designed to meet the growing demand for electricity and support the continued development of the area, particularly in light of planned development in the nearby Sde Dov complex. It features two power transformers, each with a capacity of 75 megawatts, for a total capacity of 150 megawatts.

The complex construction involved digging to a depth of approximately 20 meters below ground level, navigating challenging terrain and topography within a busy urban environment. Key engineering challenges included the precise planning and coordination required to transport and install the two large transformers deep within the substation, near an active road with continuous traffic.

The IEC stated that the new facility will bolster the power network and enhance the supply for the region.
