An unprecedented surge of rats and mice is overwhelming settlements in Israel's Gaza envelope, with the phenomenon reportedly originating in military sites before spreading to nearby communities. Experts suggest that destruction, debris, and ongoing military activity have created an ideal environment for the rodents' proliferation.

Residents are now contending with large numbers of pests daily. In Nahal Oz, one resident reported seeing around 10 mice per day, highlighting the scale of the infestation within residential areas. This has raised concerns about the impact on daily life and the agricultural sector.

Agricultural losses are significant, with some peanut fields experiencing a decline of up to 70% due to rodent damage. The persistent presence of rubble and military operations are believed by experts to be contributing factors to the rodent problem.

Compounding the issue, at least 10 settlers have been bitten by rats in recent weeks. In Nir Yitzhak, one resident recounted removing approximately 50 rats from a single home. Experts speculate that the rodents may have migrated from the Gaza Strip, driven by the destruction and military activity there.
