Project Connects Generations Through Shared Stories Ahead of Rosh Hashanah

The "Children of War" project, run by the "Atid ba-Midbar" organization, is facilitating intergenerational connections in Israel ahead of the Rosh Hashanah holiday. The initiative brings together elderly individuals, many of whom are Holocaust survivors, and Israeli teenagers from diverse backgrounds. Despite potential language barriers and significant age differences, the meetings foster understanding and camaraderie.

Participants initially express apprehension about communication and finding common ground. However, these concerns dissipate as music, stories, and laughter fill the room, leading to a desire for further interaction. Project director Irena Kudman emphasizes that the "language of love and respect" transcends linguistic and cultural divides, enabling genuine connection.

The project, which has been running for many years, often involves teenagers from the "Amit" religious school in Beersheba, who learn Jewish traditions and sciences. These encounters provide them with a personal connection to history, moving beyond textbook learning. The elderly participants, in turn, feel valued as their life experiences and memories are shared and appreciated by the younger generation.

Originally established 15 years ago to preserve the memories of Jewish heroes from the former Soviet Union through written testimonies and books, the "Children of War" project has evolved. It now focuses on creating a series of films titled "Family History is the History of the Jewish People" and has become a platform for ongoing intergenerational dialogue. The project collaborates with various organizations in the Negev region, including the Beersheba Municipality's Holocaust survivor support department, clubs, schools, and social homes, as well as receiving support from German and Norwegian foundations.

The initiative highlights the importance of community and shared experience, particularly during holiday periods like Rosh Hashanah, underscoring that unity can be achieved through mutual respect and a desire to connect, even without a common spoken language.
