Renowned Scholar of Rabbinic and Aramaic Languages, Dr. Yechiel Kara, Dies at 81

Dr. Yechiel Kara, a distinguished linguist and scholar of Rabbinic and Aramaic languages, passed away at the age of 81. Dr. Kara served as the head of the Genizah Literature Department at the Historical Dictionary Project of the Hebrew Language Academy. He also worked as an editor and linguistic editor for dozens of books across various fields.

His funeral is scheduled for today, Monday, at 5:30 PM at Har HaMenuchot in Givat Shaul, Jerusalem. Throughout his career, Kara was also a key contributor to the "Mishneh Torah" project, focusing on editing and making accessible the works of Maimonides.

Colleagues from the "Mishneh Torah" project eulogized Kara, highlighting the immense scope of his contributions. They described his work in vocalizing and editing Maimonides' entire "Mishneh Torah" and its commentary as "unique and precise." They emphasized his meticulous proofreading, linguistic accuracy, and editing, performed with "exceptional dedication, speed, and meticulousness."

Kara also played a significant role in the "Guide for the Perplexed" project, where he polished and edited the commentary. The project stated that his extensive work, amounting to tens of thousands of hours, was entirely voluntary and performed with "enormous dedication." They noted that his "quiet, immense, and thorough work" is integral to the volumes produced, fulfilling their vision of disseminating Maimonides' teachings in a clear and accessible manner for future generations.

The "Mishneh Torah" project concluded their tribute by expressing deep sorrow and gratitude, stating that his work will live on through the books and the countless students who study them.
