Apple Releases iOS 17 with Advanced AI Features and Smarter Siri
Apple has officially launched its latest operating system update, iOS 17, on September 14th at 8:00 PM Israel time. The update, announced at the developer conference in June, brings a significantly enhanced Siri, integration of Apple Intelligence across apps, and new safety tools for children. The update is available for all devices running iOS 16, starting from iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation) models and above.
The most notable change is the revamped Siri, which now boasts conversational abilities powered by foundational models, including collaboration with Google's Gemini technologies. Siri can now understand context from messages, emails, photos, and calendar entries, and can perform actions within apps. A dedicated Siri app allows users to revisit past conversations and sync securely via iCloud. New features include personalized voice options and 'Write with Siri' for drafting and editing text in Messages and Mail. Siri's visual intelligence capabilities are integrated into the camera, allowing users to ask questions about what they see, from analyzing food nutrition to extracting contact information from business cards.
Apple Intelligence introduces new features across various apps. In Photos, users can perform 'Spatial Reframing' to adjust photo angles and 'Extend' images using generative AI. Safari gains 'Organize by Topic' for managing tabs and bookmarks, and 'Notify Me' to track website changes. Image Playground and Genmoji allow for AI-generated image creation and enhanced emoji design. Shortcuts now support creating complex automations through natural language descriptions.
Other enhancements include AI-powered video summaries in the Home app, natural language event creation in Calendar, smart suggestions in Mail, and 'Call Context' in the Phone app to display relevant information during calls. Accessibility features like VoiceOver receive deeper image and chart understanding, and the Magnifier app is updated with voice control. However, the advanced AI capabilities, including Siri AI and writing tools, require the device's interface language to be set to English, as they are not supported in Hebrew. These AI features are also limited to iPhone 15 Pro models and newer.
Additional updates include improvements to Messages, Passwords, Shared iCloud Albums, and the Wallet app. Health and Fitness apps receive design updates and enhanced tracking. Music and Weather apps also get new visual features. AirPods gain custom EQ and precision finding, while FaceTime supports dual camera streaming and improved call quality. CarPlay integrates full Siri AI and video playback during parking. Performance improvements across devices are highlighted, with apps opening up to 30% faster. New child safety features include parental approval for new websites and automatic blurring of sensitive content in messages.
