Israel Secures Historic First European Volleyball Championship Win Against Portugal

The Israeli national volleyball team achieved its first-ever victory at the European Championship on Sunday, defeating Portugal 3-2 after dropping their opening two matches. This crucial win brings Israel closer to its goal of advancing to the knockout stage, which includes the top four teams from each group. Israel's performance marked a significant milestone, as it was their first appearance in the European Championship as a non-host nation since 1971.

The match saw Israel overcome an initial hesitation, losing the first set 25-19. However, the team rallied to win the second set 25-20, leveling the score. Portugal regained the lead by winning the third set 25-20, but Israel fought back in the fourth, securing a 25-20 victory to force a decisive fifth set.

In the final set, played to 15 points with a two-point advantage required, Israel dominated, winning 15-7. "We knew this was a very important game for us. There are no words. We fought, and even when things weren't going our way, we managed to come back and express our game. It was really fun on the court," said player Shi Lieberman, reflecting the team's immense excitement.

Another player, Noam Ariel, offered a more critical assessment, stating, "It wasn't a great game for us, we started poorly, and I was frustrated throughout the game. In the end, it's like a playoff game; what's important is to come out with the win. I'm glad we did it. It was incredibly difficult; the Portuguese are very evenly matched with us. It was a game of fighting. Whoever fought more, won."

The Israeli team is scheduled to play host nation Bulgaria on Monday, with another victory potentially solidifying their path to the next round.
