Dozens of Recruits Fall Ill at Training Base After Holiday Meal

Dozens of female recruits at the Nitzanim training base have reported gastrointestinal symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea, since a Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) eve meal earlier this week. An IDF spokesperson stated that only nine soldiers were affected and that the food served was not the cause. However, the father of one recruit told Ynet that at least 50 female soldiers were sick, claiming the meat dish served had a foul odor, leading many to avoid it and thus escape illness.

He further alleged that sick soldiers were forced to perform guard duty without adequate medical attention, with only a medic available and no breaks for bathroom use. The father recounted an incident where a recruit fell while on guard duty due to her illness, sustaining an arm injury. He stated that parents intervened, leading to a response from the base commander.

The IDF maintains that the food was inspected and found to be safe, and that hygiene guidelines were distributed. The base commander sent a message to parents assuring them that the health of the soldiers is a top priority, that all sick soldiers were examined and are resting, and that thorough cleaning was conducted. The IDF reiterated that the food was not the cause and that all claims will be investigated.
