Israel on High Alert for Multi-Front Conflict During Holidays

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are maintaining a high state of alert during the Jewish High Holidays, anticipating potential escalation on multiple fronts, particularly a response from Iran following the destruction of an underground tunnel network in southern Lebanon. Tensions are also high along the northern border with Lebanon, with residents, local authorities, and security forces remaining vigilant. The IDF is preparing for scenarios involving fronts extending from Syria to the West Bank, Gaza, and even Yemen. Troop presence in Gaza has increased by 300% compared to the period before October 7, 2023, with forces on high alert against possible Hamas raids on Israeli positions within the "yellow line" (border area). This heightened readiness follows the recent assassinations of a Hamas commander in Khan Younis and a sniper cell leader in Rafah, part of the IDF and Shin Bet's ongoing targeted killings policy.

In the West Bank, forces are on alert for potential Palestinian and Jewish extremist attacks. A surprise drill involving all forces in the sector was conducted recently. The IDF's Central Command has completed a series of exercises and readiness checks in the West Bank's Judea and Samaria Division in preparation for the holidays. These included dozens of drills, inter-brigade exercises along the seam line, and divisional exercises, alongside readiness inspections. This readiness effort coincides with intensified counter-terrorism operations, leading to the arrest of over 220 wanted individuals and divisional operations.

The recent "Ali Taher" operation in southern Lebanon, described by senior officers as one of the most complex of the war, involved a four-month effort including deception of Hezbollah, prolonged combat against dozens of terrorists entrenched underground, and attempts to prevent a direct, large-scale confrontation with Iran. The IDF is now redeploying forces near the Beaufort outpost to prevent Hezbollah incursions across the yellow line.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi visited the northern front, warning Hezbollah that any village hosting terror infrastructure or terrorists endangers itself. He stated that the IDF will not allow Hezbollah to rebuild its capabilities or re-establish itself in the area, reaffirming Israeli control over the yellow line. Halevi also criticized the Lebanese army's performance, emphasizing that Israel will defend its northern communities at all costs and that any harm to them or IDF forces will be met with an immediate and powerful response. He added that the Lebanese army must demonstrate effectiveness, or progress on the agreement between Israel and Lebanon will be hindered.
