Israel Boosts Military Readiness Amid Fears of Multi-Front Attacks

Israel has significantly raised its military alert level ahead of the Jewish New Year, anticipating potential surprise attacks from multiple fronts. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are enhancing readiness due to escalating tensions on various borders and beyond. Military correspondent Avi Ashkenazi of the newspaper "Maariv" reports that the defense establishment assesses the likelihood of a major security incident as high, particularly during the upcoming holiday period.

According to Ashkenazi, the IDF believes threats could emerge not only from traditional areas like Lebanon, Syria, Judea and Samaria, and the Gaza Strip, but also through attacks targeting Israelis abroad. The National Security Council has issued advisories for increased precautions and urged citizens to limit travel to certain tourist destinations. However, Ashkenazi notes there are currently no specific indicators of planned attacks outside Israel.

The military is considering the capabilities of groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, assessing they possess both the motivation and means for international attacks. The approaching Jewish holidays are seen as an additional risk factor, with concerns that adversaries might exploit the festive period for a significant attack, recalling the events of October 7th.

In response, the IDF conducted a large-scale, surprise drill called "Dawn 2" early Tuesday morning. The exercise tested the army's preparedness for full-scale scenarios across all fronts, including Lebanon, Syria, the eastern border, Judea and Samaria, Gaza, and the southern border. "The question is not if an event will happen, but when and where," Ashkenazi quotes an assessment of the situation.

Recent IDF operations underscore the heightened tensions. In southern Syria, soldiers reportedly neutralized an individual near the border fence who may have been attempting to plant an explosive device. In Lebanon, tunnel demining operations were completed near the Ali Taher ridge, with the IDF anticipating potential Hezbollah operations against soldiers or northern communities. The situation in Judea and Samaria remains particularly tense, with the discovery of a rocket, an M16 rifle, and explosives in a village in Samaria, and the arrest of a five-person cell in another area suspected of planning a major attack.

In Gaza, the threat of further attacks persists, with Hamas potentially aiming for a symbolic attack in memory of October 7th. IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir stated that Israel is entering a tense and volatile period and that the army is prepared for the holidays, emphasizing constant readiness for surprise attacks. Ashkenazi also stressed that military readiness alone is insufficient, advocating for a clearer deterrence policy from political leadership to communicate the consequences of potential attacks.
