Israel Braces for Rosh Hashanah Travel, Security Boosted in Jerusalem
Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins today, Friday, and will conclude on Sunday evening. Israelis are expected to face significant traffic congestion starting this afternoon and continuing into the late evening as many travel for holiday meals. Specific times for the holiday's commencement and end vary by city: in Tel Aviv, it begins at 6:34 PM and ends at 7:27 PM on Sunday; in Jerusalem, it starts at 6:13 PM and ends at 7:25 PM on Sunday; in Haifa, it begins at 6:22 PM and ends at 7:26 PM on Sunday; and in Beersheba, it starts at 6:32 PM and ends at 7:26 PM on Sunday.
In anticipation of the High Holy Days and Selichot prayers, Israeli police have deployed thousands of officers in Jerusalem and at holy sites and crowded locations.
