Brig. Gen. (res.) Hanan Gefen, the former commander of Israel’s Unit 8200, sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump in an interview on Channel 14, saying Trump revealed sensitive intelligence during a recent public speech. Gefen said he watched Trump’s remarks about the killing of former Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani and the intelligence activity that preceded the operation, and reacted, “I was horrified.”
Gefen said much of what Trump mentioned was already known publicly. “Most of those things, except Soleimani, were more or less published,” he said.
Turning to the talks between Washington and Tehran, Gefen said it is still too early to draw conclusions about a permanent deal. He argued that the most sensitive issues have been pushed into the next stage of negotiations, which he said will last 60 days. According to Gefen, “the problem of uranium enrichment, removal of nuclear material, missiles and proxies” is being left for those talks.
He said those issues worry not only Israel but also Gulf states. “Ballistic missiles and proxies are the two central issues,” he said, adding that it will be interesting to see how the discussions develop in the coming weeks.
