Houthis Seize Strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait Control

The Houthi movement has reportedly completed its takeover of the Yemeni side of the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a critical global shipping lane, according to reports from AFP and Reuters. The Houthis have secured control of Perim Island, also known as Mayun, located in the heart of the strait, and have advanced to the coastal city of Dubab. This expansion follows their capture of the port city of Mokha, a stronghold of the National Resistance Forces led by Tareq Saleh, just a day prior. The strategic gain gives the Houthis significant leverage over the waterway connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

The Bab el-Mandeb strait, approximately 29 kilometers wide, is a vital maritime chokepoint through which about 10% of the world's maritime trade passes. The Houthi control of Perim Island and the adjacent coast could enhance their ability to threaten shipping not only with long-range missiles and drones but also with shorter-range artillery. This development occurs shortly after Israeli military leaders issued stern warnings to the Houthis and Iran. Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir stated that Israel would not permit the establishment of existential threats from radical enemies or terrorist organizations on its borders, emphasizing the military's reach.

Navy Commander Vice Adm. Eyal Harel echoed these sentiments, asserting that distance no longer grants immunity to those who threaten Israel's maritime interests. He affirmed that the Navy monitors both the Mediterranean and Red Seas and will act covertly or overtly to protect Israel's strategic interests. The Houthi consolidation of control in the Bab el-Mandeb area lends a more tangible dimension to these recent military pronouncements, shifting the threat from distant attacks to potential physical control over a crucial international waterway.
