Maccabi Tel Aviv Faces Ambitious Aris Thessaloniki in Preseason Tournament

Maccabi Tel Aviv is set to face its toughest preseason challenge yet as they compete in a preparation tournament in Cyprus. Their first opponent, on Friday at 18:00, will be Aris Thessaloniki, followed by a match against European champions Olympiacos two days later. The tournament also features Crvena Zvezda Belgrade, though they will not play against Maccabi.

Aris Thessaloniki is described as one of European basketball's most ambitious clubs, boasting a budget exceeding 10 million euros. Despite competing in the EuroCup, the team has signed former NBA players including Jaron Blossomgame, AJ Ledbetter, Elijah Mitrou-Long, and Matt Morgan. The team's 25-year-old owner, Nikos Zisis, is reportedly close to Giannis Antetokounmpo, whose brothers Thanasis and Kostas also play for the club, which aims to win the EuroCup.

The prominent figure on Aris's bench is head coach Vassilis Spanoulis, a former star player who left Monaco due to financial difficulties. Spanoulis expressed his motivation stemmed from the project's vision and the opportunity to build something from scratch, embracing challenges. Aris is considered a favorite for the EuroCup title, alongside Hapoel Jerusalem.

Maccabi Tel Aviv coach Oded Katash views the tournament as a valuable test for his team, acknowledging they are not yet at peak fitness with recent player additions. He emphasized the importance of practice games against strong opponents for team cohesion and learning, noting the high quality of the tournament and its conditions. Katash plans to distribute playing time and experiment with different strategies, focusing on improvement and building on previous training, aiming to see progress similar to that observed between their first and second games.
