Maccabi Tel Aviv Faces Ambitious Aris Thessaloniki in Preseason Tournament

Maccabi Tel Aviv is set to face Aris Thessaloniki in their most significant preseason test to date as part of a preparation tournament in Cyprus. The team will also play against European champions Olympiacos. The tournament does not use a knockout format, with the winner determined by the best record.

Aris Thessaloniki is described as one of Europe's most ambitious basketball clubs, boasting a budget exceeding 10 million euros. The team has signed former NBA players, including Jerian Grant, Earl, and AJ Ledbetter, who previously played for the Brooklyn Nets. Aris's 25-year-old owner, Nikos Zisis, is reportedly close to Giannis Antetokounmpo, whose brothers Thanasis and Kostas also play for the team, with aspirations of winning the EuroCup. Other notable signings include Elijah Mitrou-Long, formerly of Hapoel Holon, and Matt Morgan.

The prominent figure on the Aris bench is head coach Vassilis Spanoulis, who left Monaco due to financial difficulties. Spanoulis stated his motivation for joining Aris stems from the people involved and the club's vision, seeing an opportunity to build something from the ground up and embracing challenges. Aris is considered a favorite to win the EuroCup, alongside Hapoel Jerusalem.

Maccabi Tel Aviv coach Oded Katash views the tournament as a valuable opportunity for his team to gauge their progress. He noted that the team is not yet at peak fitness, with some players recently joining, but emphasized that games against strong opponents will aid in team cohesion and game dynamics. Katash plans to distribute playing time and experiment with different strategies, focusing on improvement and building upon previous training, aiming to see progress similar to the improvement observed between their first and second games.
