New Year's Weekend Culture Guide: Israeli Film, Oasis Doc, and Live Music

As the new year weekend approaches, Israeli audiences have several cultural offerings. The critically acclaimed Israeli film "Independence," which swept the Israeli Film Awards with ten wins including Best Picture, is now playing in cinemas. The movie, representing Israel at the Oscars, tells the story of a 12-year-old boy in 1987 who uncovers a shocking secret about his admired father, leading to devastating consequences. The film, directed by Moshe Rosenthal, explores themes of family, secrets, guilt, and the price of truth.

For music fans, the documentary "Oasis: Don't Look Back In Anger" premieres this weekend, chronicling the reunion of the Gallagher brothers, Liam and Noel, and their subsequent world tour. The film captures their first joint interviews in over two decades, delving into their complex relationship, the band's dedicated fanbase, and Oasis's enduring legacy.

Singer Berry Sakharof is releasing his first solo album in 15 years, "Sulam Ha'ahava" (Ladder of Love), and will perform new songs alongside his classic repertoire at Amphi Shuni on Sunday. The album features collaborations with late lyricist Dan Toren and Micah Shprit, as well as contributions from Oren Lotanberg and Nadav Hollander, with production by Sakharof's son, Harel.

Theatergoers can choose between two plays at Habima on Sunday. "Oh God," a revival of Anat Gov's play, features a psychologist tasked with convincing God, who is contemplating ending humanity, to change his mind. The second play, "Goodbye and Thanks for the Cream Cake," follows an elderly couple who plan to end their lives together after 50 years of marriage, only to have their plans disrupted by the arrival of their children.
