Former Soccer Star Idan Axbard Recounts Near-Fatal Illness and Recovery

Sport5
Translated & summarized from Sport5 by baba
The story · English

Two years after a life-threatening illness, former soccer player Idan Axbard is still recovering, having undergone a double lung transplant and had parts of his toes amputated. Axbard, who scored over 2,000 goals in his career, now goes by Chaim Idan Axbard. He described his ongoing recovery in an interview, noting that while he appears fine, he suffers from invisible disabilities and chronic pain.

Axbard explained that his condition began with a common flu, which rapidly escalated into a system collapse. He was placed in a medically induced coma and on a ventilator for two months at Ichilov Hospital. The amputations were a consequence of his body not receiving sufficient blood flow to extremities during the critical period. He now experiences paralysis in his left foot, affecting his mobility and balance, and has not found a solution for his chronic pain.

Despite the challenges, Axbard expressed gratitude for being alive, stating he is a strong person who chooses not to complain after witnessing others in rehabilitation, including former hostages and soldiers. He recalled a time when doctors indicated his life was so fragile that even a minor touch could be fatal. Upon waking, he had no memory of the events and struggled to recall personal details.

His children are coping, though he acknowledges they may be suppressing the trauma. His wife remained by his side throughout his hospitalization. Axbard continues to follow soccer and his son plays for Maccabi Herzliya, but he limits his outings due to his compromised immune system from anti-rejection medication and the physical difficulties of walking. He is currently unable to work and is considered 100% disabled.

Looking ahead to the new year, Axbard wished for health and urged others not to take anything in life for granted.
