IDF Prepares Troops for High Holidays with Shofar Distribution and Fasting Guidelines
The IDF's Rabbinate has completed its preparations to enable soldiers to observe the High Holidays, including Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, while maintaining operational readiness. Ahead of Rosh Hashanah, all units received prayer books and siddurs, including pocket editions designed for combat soldiers operating in the field. By order of the Chief Rabbi of the IDF, Brigadier General Rabbi Eyal Karim, thousands of shofars were distributed to various units. Unit rabbis will organize shofar blowing ceremonies at bases and outposts, aiming to reach soldiers on the front lines and allow any interested soldier to hear the blasts.
In preparation for Yom Kippur, the Military Rabbinate issued special guidelines regarding fasting during operational activity. Soldiers engaged in active combat or intense operational activity are exempt from fasting and are even forbidden from fasting to ensure their fitness and mission effectiveness. Soldiers performing other duties are instructed to consult with their unit rabbis based on the nature of their activities.
Concurrently, prayer services will be held at bases and units, with prayer times adjusted to operational needs. The Military Rabbinate also distributed "Halacha K'sidra" booklets and instruction sheets detailing current regulations, including laws for shofar blowing, equipment transport, intermittent eating and drinking rules, and shortened prayer services in cases of operational constraints.
