Yemen's Houthi "Defense Minister" Reportedly Killed in Saudi Airstrike

Sources close to Yemen's legitimate government report the elimination of Mohammed Nasser al-Atifi, a prominent Houthi military leader identified as the "defense minister" in the Ansar Allah administration. Al-Atifi was reportedly killed in a targeted airstrike, believed to have been carried out by the Saudi Air Force as part of its ongoing campaign against the Houthis. He was considered the second most important military figure within Ansar Allah and a close associate of its leader, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi. However, confirmation of his death is still pending.

Speculation about an Israeli role has emerged in Arab media and social networks, citing the presumed level of intelligence required to locate such a high-ranking Houthi commander. Arab commentators have recalled past Israeli intelligence assistance in countering the Houthis. Al-Atifi previously served in Yemen's official army, heading its intelligence division, before defecting to the Houthis during the civil war.

This is not the first attempt to eliminate al-Atifi. On August 28, 2025, Israeli Air Force operations targeting Houthi leadership reportedly included al-Atifi among 15 high-ranking commanders. At that time, reports indicated he was in critical condition, with subsequent claims of his death later proving premature. If confirmed, his death would represent a significant blow to the Houthi military command, a key player in regional conflicts.

Amidst multiple ongoing confrontations, Israel is reportedly reassessing its priorities, with Iran now designated the primary theater of war, followed by Lebanon. The threat posed by Yemen's Houthis remains relevant but is considered a secondary concern.
