Omer Mayer Poised for Breakout Season with Purdue

Israeli guard Omer Mayer is set to play a pivotal role for Purdue University in the upcoming basketball season, with analysts predicting a significant career leap. Following the departure of key stars, Mayer is expected to take on a much larger offensive responsibility.

Draft analyst Arsalan Demir highlighted Mayer's potential, stating, "After Braden Smith left, this is his team. He is one of my favorite breakout candidates." Demir described Mayer as one of the "craftiest guards" he has seen in recent years, possessing clear potential to become an NBA starting player. He anticipates Mayer will lead Purdue's offense and be among the best guards in the Big Ten conference.

Demir believes Mayer is well-suited for both guard positions, noting his physicality and toughness despite average length and athleticism. "His physicality and consistency will translate very well to the NBA," Demir commented, though he pointed out that only 19 of Mayer's 194 field goal attempts were close to the basket, contributing to his 41.2% shooting last season. To succeed in the NBA, Mayer will need to improve his jump shooting off the dribble and passes, although Demir also praised his excellent passing ability.

Despite potential risks associated with his jump shot reliance, Demir concluded that Mayer is "the real deal," bringing physicality, toughness, and a deep understanding of the game. Mayer's experience with the Israeli national team is also considered significant. Demir projects Mayer could be a top-20 pick in the 2028 NBA draft, potentially declaring for the 2027 draft after a strong season where he could be named to the All-Big Ten first team.
