Israeli Guard Omer Meir Poised for Breakout Season at Purdue

Israeli basketball player Omer Meir is set to have a career-altering season with Purdue University, according to draft analysts. Following the departure of key players, Meir is expected to take on a significant role for the Boilermakers, with some US-based analysts identifying him as a potential breakout star for the 2026-27 season.

Draft analyst Arsin Demir highlighted Meir's potential, stating that with the exit of Braden Smith, "this is his team." Demir described Meir as one of the "craftiest guards" he has seen in recent years, possessing the clear potential to become an NBA starting guard in the future. He anticipates Meir will lead Purdue's offense this season and be among the best guards in the Big Ten conference. While acknowledging the NBA is a different league requiring consistent performance, Demir believes Meir can play in the NBA for over a decade.

Demir further elaborated on Meir's strengths, noting his suitability for both guard positions. Despite average length and not being a top-tier athlete, Meir compensates with physicality, toughness, and strong footwork, qualities expected to translate well to the NBA. However, Demir pointed out a weakness: only 19% of Meir's field goal attempts were close to the basket, contributing to his 41.2% shooting last season. To succeed in the NBA, Meir will need to improve his jump shot off the dribble and passes, though he is recognized as a natural scorer and excellent passer.

Concluding his assessment, Demir called Meir "the real deal," acknowledging the risk associated with his jump-shot-heavy game but emphasizing his basketball IQ, physicality, toughness, and valuable experience with the Israeli national team.
